I’ve built around 50 websites with WordPress over the last decade, using dozens of of different themes. GeneratePress is unequivocally the easiest to use WordPress theme I’ve encountered in the decade I’ve been using WordPress. Created by Canadian developer Tom Usborne, GeneratePress has been downloaded half a million times and has over 15,000 customers who’ve upgraded to the premium version.

I first discovered GeneratePress in a Facebook advertisement. I wasn’t looking for a theme at the time, but I read some of the comments out of curiosity. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, so I thought I’d try the theme out on my personal blog. Initially, I downloaded and installed the free version, but was so impressed that I bought the premium upgrade almost immediately.

Standout Features

Entirely powered by the Theme Customizer, so there’s no ugly and cumbersome theme options page to work with. Almost every aspect of the theme can be modified from within the customizer, so there’s really no need to worry about creating a Child Theme.

Modular design allows you to disable the theme features you don’t need, keeping the theme fast and lightweight.

Broad plugin compatibility, so it works seamlessly with popular WordPress extensions like WooCommerce, BuddyPress, and bbPress.

The Site Library

One of the theme’s most exciting recent additions is the Site Library, which is a collection of ready-to-use layouts built on GeneratePress. If you’re using the premium version, you can choose any design from the library and install it with just a couple of clicks. A few designs require that you have a 3rd party page builder plugin installed, but there’s a good variety of layouts that work with just vanilla GeneratePress.

The basic GeneratePress theme is free. The premium versions—which gives you all the additional features and access to the Site Library—is $39.95. Compared to other popular multi-purpose themes like Genesis, Avada, and Divi, which range between $60 and $100, GeneratePress is very affordable.

In Conclusions

GeneratePress is everything I look for in a theme. It’s fast, lightweight, affordable, easy to customize, and very flexible when a project demands complex custom development. Other than eCommerce projects, where Storefront’s deep integration with WooCommerce is invaluable, GeneratePress is my go-to theme for WordPress site development.
